Jay Pei & Vridian are more recent names to jump into India’s colorful electronic music landscape, but no longer classify as the ‘new kids on the block’. Since their inception, these projects have amassed an impressive musical catalogue with releases on Qilla Records, Manjumasi, Deer Dear, Traum Schallplatten between the both of them. Sharing a knack for modern melodic dance music, both artists first brought their distinct approaches into an appealing point of coincidence with back to back DJ sets. This point of coincidence eventually found its way with them into the studio.

These studio sessions resulted in a unique blend of Jay Pei’s melodic prowess, Vridian’s infatuation with broken beat arrangements and their shared appreciation of the 80’s retro-futurist aesthetic. We are now serving this admixture to you in the form of ‘Clandestine’, their latest single. This is a special one for the both of them as it is the first time they are releasing their music independently.

‘In the 80’s, the world saw a huge jump in all kinds of consumer technology and it was also the decade that birthed electronic music as a global phenomenon. That time period has a distinct audio visual aesthetic with its big, reverberated drums, the vapor wave video game aesthetic and synth inspired music trickling into mainstream film/tv/commercials. This was also the time of the Cold War, that unexpectedly inspired conspiracy theories related to secret agencies, political mind games and spy warfare. It seems to be like these were fairly exciting times and ‘Clandestine’ is our representation of what it might have been like to make music back then. Of course, this inference was made after we had heard what he had done. The studio jam was very much in the moment and we had no vision for the final outcome - till we had a final outcome, that is.’

The track boasts spacey pads, non-quantized trills and a grungy rhythm section that come together to create a cloud of mystery which is eventually solved by a charmingly haunting vocoded melody. The visual direction for the release has been provided by Reuben Menezes, a 17 year old collagist / visual designer based in Mumbai, India.
